The Other One from 2/2 is dull and doesn't have much going on.There is a good jam at the 10 minute mark where Jerry plays some repeater phrases and Phil locks in with him for a cool two minute jam before the second verse.

The important part of this release was naturally the Dark Star->Stephen->11 from the 12/20 and that is definitely lacking. So I would consider it a bust.

I was referring to the 12/21/69 other one which is on the bonus disc. I listened to the bonus disc and disc one all the way through last night and certainly wasnt blown away. Of course I was socializing and drinking during all of this so my attention wasnt fully there, however I thought the dark star from 12/20 and the other one from 12/21 were worth another listen at least. All in all not the greatest release, I think DP 5 blows this one out of the water but what can ya do. Honestly they should be trying to release a 68 show IMO

The 3 dates with the bonus disc is confusing me for some reason.I must be getting old. There isn't much to get excited about on this release. On to the next one.

Is everyone listening to the same music I am? I haven't even listened to the Bonus Disc yet and I am more than impressed with this release. The sensational Black Peter from St. Louis and one of my personal favorite Dark Stars from the same show in amazing sound quality. The Fillmore Dark Star may not be mind blowing as a whole, but the final 3 or 4 minutes are very compelling as well as the China>Rider. The backstory of the tapes adds to the mystique of this music, but I do feel this is a good representation of some of the Dead's better playing from this era.

As DL said in his chat about this release, they are playing very loud at this point in their career and that's exactly how this music should be listened to. I'm happy with this release and am enjoying it.

We seem to agree on most points you mention.I said the sound quality is fantastic, the Black Peter is really good and I didn't mention the 12/20 China/Rider which is good because I only talked about the music which was new to us on this release. As for the Dark Star I found a few snippets interesting.Jerry plays an intriguing run from about 10:45 to 12:00 with an odd tone and a crisp jazzy feel. The 12/20 and 2/2 Dark Star's share a similar feel so I could see where if you liked one you would like both.I also agree that this release is a good representation of the era.Late 69' until Keith joined the band I find lacking. The backstory of the tapes make absolutely no difference to me.

In this old thread about late 69' under 12/20 I mention the China Cat is good,so you don't think I'm just being agreeable.

Here is another old thread where I discuss not liking Dark Star's from 1970 all that much,so you don't think I was just being contentious.I am not suggesting you bother with either thread.Just reinforcing my sentiments on this era prior to this release.

Nice. I never thought you were being contentious, your opinion is your opinion and I am always interested in hearing different viewpoints. For me, 1970 is probably my favorite year in general and for Dark Stars. I do thank you for the links to those threads, they are pretty informative and I don't think I've read them before. So thanks!

The forumites contributed very nicely to those threads with information rich posts.I also enjoy hearing what people think about things here on the forum.I'm going to take some time and go through the 70' Dark Star's again and see what I hear this time.
